Brush up on your drinking terms We've provided a list of all the common terms associated with drinking. If we've left out anything that you'd like a definition for, please use our contact page and tell us what term you'd like defined.   • A&W Root Beer
    A creamy, tasty root beer made with caramel. Available in grocery stores.
  • Absente
    An anise liqueur, made from southern wormwood (Artemisia abrotanum) and sugar. Absente is sold in liquor stores in the United States and Europe.
  • Absinthe
    A bitter, green or clear liqueur, produced from herbs including the herb Artemisia absinthium, commonly referred to as "grande wormwood". Absinthe is available in liquor stores throughout most of the European Union and Canada.
  • Absolut Vodka
    A premium brand of vodka distilled from winter wheat and slightly flavored with dried fruit. Available in liquor stores.
  • Aged Rum
    A medium-bodied, darker rum aged in oak barrels for a richer flavor, aroma and color. Available in liquor stores.
  • Alcohol
    Normally refers to grain alcohol - a double distilled spirit derived from the fermentation of grain. It is, at 190 proof or 95% alcohol content, extremely potent. Available in liquor stores.
  • Ale
    Generally described as having full body and heavy hop flavor. Ale is brewed from malted barley using a top-fermenting brewers' yeast. Available in liquor stores.
  • Alize Red Passion
    A combination of Alize Gold Passion with cranberry and hints of peach. Available in liquor stores.
  • Alize
    A brand of fruit flavored liqueurs, usually cognac-based. Produced in several varieties, the original being Alize Gold Passion, a blend of passion fruit and other exotic fruits. Available in liquor stores.
  • Almond Liqueur
    Almond flavored liqueur made from almonds or apricot pits. Available in liquor stores.
  • Amarula Cream Liqueur
    A smooth, cream liqueur with a taste of slightly fruity caramel. Available in liquor stores.
  • Amber Rum
    Also called Gold rum, amber rums are medium bodied rums aged breifly in wooden barrels. Available in liquor stores.
  • American Whiskey
    A distilled beverage produced in the United States from a fermented mash of cereal grain. Available in liquor stores.
  • Anejo Rum
    A rich, mellow, golden rum made from a blend of aged rums. Available in liquor stores.
  • Angostura Bitters
    A strong, rum-based liquor made from a secret blend of rare tropical herbs and spices. Available in liquor stores.
  • Anise
    A plant from the parsley family with sweet, oval-shaped licorice flavored seeds.
  • Apple Brandy
    A sweet, apple flavored brandy distilled from the apple fruit. Available in liquor stores.
  • Apple Cider
    Apple Cider (sometimes soft cider or sweet cider) is a tangy, apple flavored, non-alcoholic beverage produced from fermented/unfermented apple juice. Available in grocery stores.
  • Apple Juice
    An apple flavored beverage made from the juice of the apple fruit. Available in grocery stores.
  • Apple Schnapps
    An apple flavored liqueur made from distilled apple juice. Available in liquor stores.
  • Apples
    The fruits grown on the apple tree. Available in grocery stores.
  • Apricot Brandy
    An apricot flavorder brandy distilled from apricots. Available in liquor stores.
  • Apricot Nectar
    A juice made from concentrated apricots mixed with water and sugar. Available in grocery stores.
  • Aquavit
    A clear or pale yellow Scandinavian flavored liquor distilled from potatoes or grain. Available in liquor stores.

  • Bacardi 151 Rum
    A high proof, dark, aromatic rum. Available in liquor stores.
  • Bacardi Dark
    A blend of selected rums filtered through charcoal and aged in charred oak barrels for up to four years. Available in liquor stores.
  • Bailey's Irish Cream
    An irish cream made from a blend of cream, sugar, cocoa and irish whiskey. Available in liquor stores.
  • Bananas
    The soft, yellow, edible fruit found in hanging clusters on several tree-like plants of the genus Musa. Available in grocery stores.
  • Barley
    Barley is a cereal grain derived from the annual grass Hordeum Vulgare and is used in making malt for beer.
  • Beef Bouillon
    Dehydrated beef broth cubes made by combining dehydrated meat stock, a small amount of solid fat, salt and seasonings. Available in grocery stores.
  • Bitters
    A bitter is an alcohol beverage produced from a blend of herbs, roots and plants. Available in liquor stores.
  • Black Cherry Jello
    A black cherry flavored gelatin powder. Available in grocery stores.
  • Black Pepper
    Black pepper (Piper Nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for it's fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. Available in grocery stores.
  • Black Raspberry Liqueur
    A rich liqueur made from black raspberries. Available in liquor stores.
  • Black Rum
    Also known as dark rum, black rum is dark and flavorful, and is aged longer in heavily charred oak barrels. Available in liquor stores.
  • Black Sambuca
    A rich, aniseed flavored Italian liqueur. Available in liquor stores.
  • Blackberry Brandy
    A blackberry flavored brandy liqueur made from blackberries and brandy and sweetened with sugar. Available in liquor stores.
  • Blackberry Liqueur
    A blackberry flavored liqueur made from blackberries infused in alcohol. Available in liquor stores.
  • Blended Whiskey
    A whiskey made from a combination of malt whiskey and grain whiskey, blended with neutral liqueurs or light whiskeys. Available in liquor stores.
  • Blue Curacao
    An orange flavored, blue colored liqueur made with the dried peel of the laraha citrus fruit, grown on the island of Curacao. Available in liquor stores.
  • Blueberry Schnapps
    A strong, dry blueberry flavored triple distilled liqueur. Available in liquor stores.
  • Bombay Sapphire Gin
    A clear, full bodied london dry gin flavored with juniper berries and other powerful herbs and spices. Available in liquor stores.
  • Bourbon
    Whiskey produced from a fermented mash of corn, rye, wheat, malted barley or malted rye grain. Available in liquor stores.
  • Brandy
    Brandy is produced by distilling wine, the wine having first been produced by fermenting grapes or other fruits. Available in liquor stores.
  • Brown Sugar
    A sucrose sugar product brown in color, made with a combination of white sugar and molasses. Available in grocery stores.
  • Butterscotch Schnapps
    A butterscotch flavored liqueur produced from a blend of brown sugar and butter. Available in liquor stores.

  • Calvados
    A popular apple brandy distilled from fermented apples. Available in liquor stores.
  • Campari
    A bitter Italian aperitif made from a secret recipe of aromatic herbs and liqueur. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cantaloupe
    A juicy, orange melon sometimes used as a garnish. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cappuccino
    An Italian coffee drink prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed milk foam. To make cappuccinos at home you must have a cappuccino steamer, or make the drink without the foam.
  • Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum
    A golden Puerto Rican rum flavored with spices and other natural flavors. Available in liquor stores.
  • Carbonated Water
    Also known as sparkling water or seltzer, carbonated water is plain water into which carbon dioxide gas has been dissolved. It is the defining component of most soft drinks. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cayenne Pepper
    A hot, red chili pepper usually ground into a spice. Available in grocery stores.
  • Celery Salt
    A flavored salt used for rimming glasses, made with celery seed and salt. Available in grocery stores.
  • Celery
    A nutritious vegetable that comes in long green stalks. Available in grocery stores.
  • Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur
    A sweet red raspberry flavored french liqueur made from black raspberries, honey, fruits and herbs. Available in liquor stores.
  • Champagne
    A type of sparkling white wine that comes from the northern reguion of France called Champagne. Available in liquor stores.
  • Chardonnay
    A type of white wine and the type of green grape used to make that white wine. Available in liquor stores.
  • Chartreuse
    A brand of liqueur made from a mixture of over 100 herbs and spices. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cherry Brandy
    A red, full bodied, sweet cherry flavored liqueur made from the juice of dark red cherries. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cherry Jello
    A cherry flavored gelatin powder. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cherry Liqueur
    A sweetened, cherry flavored liqueur. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cherry Vodka
    A sweet, cherry flavored vodka. Available in liquor stores.
  • Chocolate Liqueur
    A chocolate flavored liqueur. Available in liquor stores.
  • Chocolate Milk
    White milk with chocolate syrup mixed in. Often homemade, but also sold premade in grocery stores.
  • Chocolate Mint Liqueur
    A chocolate and mint flavored liqueur. Available in liquor stores.
  • Chocolate Syrup
    A sweet combination of unsweetened cocoa powder, corn syrup and sugar, amongst other flavorings. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cinnamon Schnapps
    A strong, dry cinnamon flavored schnapps, sometimes decorated with floating gold flakes. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cinnamon
    Comes from the bark of a small evergreen tree native to Sri Lanka. Available in grocery stores.
  • Citrus Vodka
    A citrus flavored vodka made with the addition of lemon and other citrus fruit. Available in liquor stores.
  • Clamato Juice
    A blend of tomato juice and liquified clams. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cloves
    The flower bud of the clove tree, a pungent aromatic spice. Available in grocery stores.
  • Club Soda
    Water which has been charged with carbon dioxide. Available in grocery stores.
  • Coca-Cola
    A cola flavored carbonated soft drink made with extracts from cocoa leaves, kola nuts, sugar, caramel and other substances. Available in convenience stores and grocery stores.
  • Cocoa Powder
    The nonfat component of chocolate in powder form. Also the main flavoring component in hot cocoa. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cocoa
    The nonfat component of chocolate, usually sold as a powder. Available in grocery stores.
  • Coconut Liqueur
    A coconut flavored liqueur made by the maceration of coconut in white rum. Available in liquor stores.
  • Coconut Milk
    A sweet, milky white cooking base derived from the meat of a mature coconut. Coconut milk is prepared by directly squeezing grated coconut meat through cheesecloth. Available in grocery stores.
  • Coconut Rum
    Coconut flavored white rum. Available in liquor stores.
  • Coffee Brandy
    A coffee flavored brandy liqueur distilled from coffee beans. Available in liquor stores.
  • Coffee
    A brewed drink, rich with caffiene, made from the roasted seeds of the coffee bean plant. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cognac
    A renowned french brandy produced via the distillation of white wines. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cointreau Triple Sec
    A kind of triple sec made from the distillation of sweet and bitter orange peels, blended with natural alcohol, sugar and water. Cointreau is produced in Saint-Barthelemy-d'Anjou, a suburb of Angers, France. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cough Syrup
    A medicine drink used for curing coughs. Available in pharmacies.
  • Cranberry Juice
    A dark red fruit juice made from cranberries and sugar. Available in grocery stores.
  • Cranberry Vodka
    A cranberry flavored vodka. Available in liquor stores.
  • Cream Soda
    A vanilla flavored carbonated soft drink. Available in grocery stores and convenience stores.
  • Cream
    A dairy product composed of the higher butterfat layer skimmed from the top of milk before homogenization. Available in grocery stores.

    A clear, red, almond flavored liqueur produced from apricot kernels. Available in liquor stores.

    A sweet, yellow, banana flavored liqueur. Available in liquor stores.

  • Honey

    A homemade beverage made by combining hot water with instant coffee powder.
  • Irish Cream
    A cream liqueur based on Irish whiskey, cream, and sometimes other ingredients such as chocolate. Available in liquor stores.
  • Irish Mist Whiskey Liqueur
    A brown whiskey liqueur produced in Dublin, Ireland, made with Irish whiskey, heather honey, clover honey, other herbs and other spirits. Available in liquor stores.

    A full-bodied liquor usually distilled from a mixture of malted and unmalted barley and other grains. Available in liquor stores.
  • Italian Vermouth
    Refers to a sweet, red vermouth produced in Italy. Available in liquor stores.

  • Jamaican Rum

  • Jim Beam Bourbon Whiskey
    A brand of bourbon whiskey aged in charred oak barrels for added character. Available in liquor stores.

  • Kahlua Coffee Liqueur
    A coffee flavored liqueur produced in Mexico and made with coffee, sugar, corn syrup and vanilla. Available in liquor stores.
  • Kirschwasser
    A cherry flavored liqueur made from double distillation of morello cherries. Available in liquor stores.
  • Kool-Aid
    A brand of drink mix powder available in a variety of flavors. Available in grocery stores.
  • Kummel
    A sweet, colorless liqueur made with caraway seed, cumin and fennel. Available in liquor stores.

  • Lager
    A type of beer made from the slow fermentation of yeast and brewed and stored at low temperatures. Available in liquor stores.
  • Lemon Juice
    The juice extracted from squeezing the lemon fruit, often and easily homemade, but also sold premade. Available in grocery stores.
  • Lemon Lime Soda
    A type of clear, carbonated soft drink flavored with lemon and lime. Commonly used as a home remedy for nausea and upset stomachs. Available in grocery stores and convenience stores.
  • Lemon Vodka
    A vodka flavored with lemon and occasionally other spices. Available in liquor stores.
  • Lemonade
    A sweet drink, frequently homemade but also available in packaged form, made with lemon juice, sugar and water. Available in grocery stores and convenience stores.
  • Lemons
    Refers to both the edible yellow fruit produced by the small evergreen tree and the tree itself. Available in grocery stores.
  • Licor 43
    A Spanish liqueur made from a total of 43 different ingredients including citrus and fruit juices, herbs, spices, and vanilla. Available in liquor stores.
  • Light Cream
    A type of cream lower in butterfat than regular cream. Available in grocery stores.
  • Light Rum
    A dry, light-bodied rum produced from sugarcane juice and molasses and aged in uncharred (plain) oak casks or stainless steel tanks, to maintain it's clarity. Available in liquor stores.
  • Lime Cordial
    A lime flavored syrup made from concentrated lime and sugar. Available in grocery stores.
  • Lime Jello
    A lime flavored gelatin powder. Available in grocery stores.
  • Lime Juice
    The juice extracted from squeezing the lime fruit, often and easily homemade, but also sold premade. Available in grocery stores.
  • Lime Vodka
    A lime flavored vodka. Available in liquor stores.
  • Limeade
    A sweet, sour beverage, often and easily homemade, consisting of lime juice, sugar and water. Also available in frozen concentrate form in grocery stores.
  • Limes
    A type of fruit that comes in many different species and hybrids. Limes are round, green to yellow in color, contain sour acidic pulp, and produce juice sometimes used to accent the flavors of foods and beverages. Available in grocery stores.
  • Liqueur
    An alcoholic beverage flavored with fruit, herbs, spices, nuts, flowers, coffee or cream and sugar. Available in liquor stores.
  • London Dry Gin
    A type of distilled gin, sometimes flavored with fruits, herbs or spices, but may not contain added sugar or colorants. Available in liquor stores.

  • Madeira Wine
    A fortified red wine produced in the Madeira Islands of Portugal. Available in liquor stores.
  • Malt Liquor
    A North American term referring to a type of beer with high alcohol content. Available in liquor stores.
  • Mandarin Liqueur
    An orange flavored liqueur made from the mandarin fruit. Available in liquor stores.
  • Mandarine Napoleon Mandarin Liqueur
    A mandarin flavored liqueur produced in Belgium, made with the extracted oils of rare Sicilian tangerines. Available in liquor stores.
  • Mango Nectar
    The sugar-rich concentrated juice produced from the mango fruit. Available in grocery stores.
  • Mangoes
    A sweet, fleshy stone fruit belonging to the genus Mangifera. Available in grocery stores.
  • Maple Syrup
    A sweet syrup made from the sap of certain species of maple trees. Available in grocery stores.
  • Maraschino Cherries
    A sweet cherry preserved in sugar syrup. Frequently used to accompany cocktails. Available in grocery stores.
  • Maraschino Liqueur
    A clear liqueur flavored with Marasca cherries, which are grown in Dalmatia, Croatia. Available in liquor stores.
  • Marshmallows
    A sweet candy like confection made with sugar or corn syrup, water, gelatin, dextrose, flavorings, and sometimes coloring. Available in grocery stores.
  • Melon Liqueur
    A melon flavored liqueur. Available in liquor stores.
  • Melons
    The sweet, flavorful, fleshy fruit from the plant family Cucubitaceae. Available in grocery stores.
